Broodmare - Preventive Medicine


BROODMARE - PREVENTATIVE MEDICINE

1.     Prenatal Care
A. Housing
1. isolation from transient populations
2. ample exercise
3. proper feeding and watering facilities
4. introduce mare to foaling area 5 weeks before foaling
foaling area - quiet, clean, dry, well ventilated 12' x 12' bedding - straw is best
B. Immunizations and Deworming
1; rhinopneumonitis - vaccinate with Pneumabort-K during the 5th, 7th and 9th months of gestation (additional protection can be obtained by vaccinating every 2 months of gestation)
2. encephalomyelitis - 1 month before foaling
3. tetanus toxoid - 1 month before foaling
4. influenza - varies with situation; 1 month before foaling
5. Potomac Horse Fever - in problem areas ; 1 month before foaling
6. strangles-only if herd problem; 1 month before foaling
7. deworm every 2 months during pregnancy
C. Nutrition
1. avoid overfeeding mares
2. maintenance diet first 2/3 of pregnancy (8 months)
3. last 3 months of pregnancy and lactation increase grain (12-14% protein) increase protein level, but not total pounds of feed during last 3 months
4. feed good quality hay
5. free access to salt and water

2.  Foaling
1. keep area quiet
2. wrap tail, wash perineum and udder
3. open Caslicks
4. if active foaling is greater than 30 minutes without progress,
contact veterinarian

3.     Postpartum Care
A. Foal
1. clear airways (nostrils, mouth) of mucus
2. allow foal to remain attached via umbilicus to receive blood from mare until mare stands and breaks cord
3. once broken, dip navel with 7% tincture of iodine (repeat daily if navel remains moist)
4. be sure foal suckles within 3 hours of birth
5. give foal enema
6. new foal exam by veterinarian at 12 to 48 hours of life
7. blood test for failure of passive transfer through colostrum
B. Mare
1. check udder for mastitis
2. collect and save placenta (should be expelled within 4 hours of birth)
3. administer oxytocin (2cc IM) if mare does not pass placenta within 4 hours, then repeat every 2 hours until the placenta  has passed
4. retained placenta is a medical emergency and the mare must be attended by a veterinarian if the placenta is not passed within 8 hours
